COLE BRINGS THE LATE MODEL HARDWARE BACK NORTH; CHRISTIAN FLIPS SCRIPT IN MINI STOCK PHOTO FINISH
For immediate release from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl
WATERFORD – Shawn Gaedeke took the green in the lead but was only able to hold it down for one lap when contact between he and Kyle Gero sent both drivers deep in the field. This gave the front row to two-time winner Devin Deshaies and 2024 champion Jason Palmer. The two raced side by side in a spirited battle for the lead with Deshaies eventually putting a little space between the two. Caution would fly just short of halfway, changing the complexion of the race for the first time. Contact on the front row resulted in Deshaies making some heavy head-on contact with the front straight wall. Palmer and a returning Brody Monahan made up the front row now, engaging in a nail-biter of a side by side race. Monahan had the advantage over Palmer from the outside groove, and was even able to clear him at one point. But Palmer dug deep and kept a nose underneath. The two would come together with just three laps left leaving Randy Cole on point. Cole had shown speed but an early incident sent him to the back of the field. Not only did he recover, he was able to hang on to pick up his first win in the Late Models.
John Brunelle tried his best to hold down Evan Bourgeois at the start of the SK Lights but quickly got swallowed by the sea of modifieds. Bourgeois and Nickolas Hovey ran away from the field and a strong Hovey was in the lead by lap 3. Some quick laps were laid down further increasing the gap over second while Robert Bloxsom III had a mirror full of Eddie Gomarlo and last weeks winner Tyler Chapman. The yellow flag flew for the first time with only 5 laps to go erasing the massive lead Hovey held. It didn’t matter in the end, as Hovey went back to gapping Bourgeois. Chapman was able to clear Bloxsom for third and got to work for second but by that time it was too late. Hovey made it look easy taking the checkers, picking up his second win of the season.
Ike Chima and Al Stone III led the Street Stocks to green with Stone taking the lead, but Chima hanging tough. Aaron Plemons and Jordan Hadley put the pressure on Chima, both successfully passing him on the outside to move into the top 3. Stone clicked off a few laps in the lead until Plemons looked to his outside for the race lead. By lap 9 he was scored the leader and from then on it was over. Hadley also worked by Stone a few laps later but couldn’t close the gap to Plemons. This marks his fourth win of the season and his third in a row.
The Trucks got off to a rocky start almost immediately when David Venice caught fire bringing out the red flag. Jaysin Beal had the lead safely locked down but the rest of the field got sent scattering when the red lights turned on that included Andy Pellegrini with heavy front end damage and Austin Long having to pit from second with a left rear flat tire. With Venice safely out of his Truck and the field sorted out, they went back green with Jaysin resuming his lead over Brad Caddick. 2024 champion Brad Strickland was back in action working by Charles Beal and crossing over Caddick to slip into second, where he would remain comfortable for awhile. Strickland’s Truck would limp to the infield when the caution flew with just 5 to go moving Pellegrini into the second spot. Jaysin effortlessly coasted to the win with Pellegrini in his mirror, and Caddick held off Dylan Cabral in a heated battle to land on the podium. This would be Jaysin’s first win in the division.
David Lee took point in the Mini Stocks as the fog was settling in. He got the jump off Nick Pappacoda to lead the first portion of the race leaving the field to sort it out among themselves. Pappacoda held down the fort in the low groove with David Dorr trying the outside. On lap 7 Dorr made a cross-over move and contact between the two sent Dorr’s’ front tires off the ground. The move paid off and he was locked in at second place for the time being while Ray Christian III and Chris Garside moved towards the front of the field. A caution at halfway erased Lee’s lead, and while he got the Jump off of Dorr, so did Christian. He and Andrew Krzeminski moved into the top 2 with Dorr recovering on on their tail. After a restart with 9 to go and Christian safely out front, Krzeminski and Dorr made contact and Garside took to the outside groove in 3-wide fashion to move into second. Garside got a nose underneath Christian and for the last handful of laps it was anyones game. This time around, it was RC3 with the win in a photo finish at the line separated by 0.054 seconds.
Dylan Freeman’s success in the heat race quickly translated over to the feature as he moved from fourth to first by lap 2. Riley Paul quickly got to his bumper and turned up the pressure looking low, but didn’t have enough to get by. This was the story for a majority of the race. With a mirror full of Paul and Zachary Martinez, Freeman held strong in the outside groove to maintain his lead. Eventually his perseverance paid off and he built a sizable lead over the pair to pick up his second win of the season in a caution free event.
The Wednesday night Super X-Cars took to the Saturday stage this week in a 40 lap main event. 18 cars on the premises were led by Pat Donnellan and David Ciastko to the green. Donnellan led the first couple circuits until a caution put him up against Ray Phillips for the lead. He got the jump but was quickly taken down by Bill Reiman for the race lead. Reiman, Ryan Magliano, Sean Skinner, and Greg Moran Jr broke away from the field until a caution for a stalled car on lap 11 bunched the field back up. Reiman resumed the control he had on the field, but this time Ben Pollard joined the fray. Pollard was able to work his way from fifth, chip away at Reiman’s lead, and engage in a side by side battle during this final stage of the race. It came down to the wire as Pollard was able to keep a fender ahead after trading paint with Reiman securing the win in a photo finish.
