MOLLEUR SCORES SK MODIFIED® HAT TRICK; GARSIDE NOSES AHEAD OF CHRISTIAN IN MINI STOCK CONTEST
For immediate release from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl
WATERFORD – Josh Zentek shot out to an early lead in the SK Modifieds® but quickly had a mirror full of Tim Jordan. An incident on the second lap taking Todd Owen out of the equation allowed Jordan the space to pull into the lead. Andrew Molleur worked his way through the field with Keith Rocco in his tire tracks, trying to reel in Jordan after the lead he had built up. By lap 10, Molleur was in second. With 15 laps to go, he made his move on Jordan for the lead. Jordan would attempt the cross-over after getting passed but it didn’t stick. While this was going on, Anthony Flannery along with Eric Berndt (who would rebound from an early incident) would pass Rocco. Berndt then got by Flannery to solidify his spot on the podium. Once Molleur built up his lead, it was all over and he would score his third win in a row for the division.
The SK Lights hit the track for the first time in over a month after rainouts and scheduled nights off. The first two laps were a bit hectic but Eddie Gomarlo quickly took control holding off attacks from previous winners Kevin Davis and Tyler Chapman. Davis slid back through the field after making significant contact with the wall, and Gomarlo took up Chapmans real estate to maintain his lead. Robert Bloxsom III worked his way towards the front in an impressive run that overcame some hurdles. By halfway he reeled in the leaders dueling and crossing-over with Nickolas Hovey. Gomarlo was able to hang on after a caution with 3 to go to win while Bloxsom took advantage of the restart to slip by Chapman into 2nd on the podium.
After winning his Truck heat race, Cameron Varricchio rocketed off to a big lead in the feature. That lead would quickly be erased on lap 5 when a couple quick cautions brought Jake Coutu into the picture. He beat Varricchio into the corner on the restart where he’d lead the next 5 laps. The race turned into a slugfest but that didn’t change much of what happened up front. Coutu would ace every restart, taking off from the field, leaving Varricchio to deal with Charles Beal for second. Varricchio clawed his way into 2nd scoring his career best in the division. Coutu went on to easily take the win in what would be his second in his career.
The first 21 laps of the Mini Stocks went off incident free, with no shortage of action. David Lee would lead Randy Churchill early, while Chris Garside took Churchill down on lap 8. Ray Christian worked his way through traffic once again, finding himself in Garside’s tire tracks. With about 10 to go, Garside had made his move on Lee taking over the lead but immediately engaging in a side-by-side battle with Christian. They raced together until a caution with 4 to go realigned the field for one final shootout. Garside chose the outside over Christian and was able to pin him down even after Charles Canfield attempted a bold three wide swipe at the lead. The 2023 champion would pick up his first win of the season.
Jake Caprio set fast time in his Crown Vic debut and made a bold 3-wide attempt on the opening lap of the feature, but Gregg Prevost III was just a hair better when the green flag dropped. The two ran nose to tail even after a halfway caution bunched the pack back up. Caprio made numerous corner entry attacks on Prevost but none were close enough to bear any fruit. Prevost picked up his second win of the season.
Avery Stoehr came from out of nowhere to steal the win in the NEMA Midgets, and Mike Pernesiglio scored his first career win at the Speedbowl in the NEMA Lites.
