JON PULEO STEALS THE SHOW WITH SK MODIFIED WIN; HARD WORK PAYS OFF FOR CURRY IN LATE MODEL VICTORY LANE
For immediate release from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl
WATERFORD CT – Keith Rocco clicked off the first couple laps as the SK Modified® leader but Timmy Jordan took control quickly. Jon Puleo was making his first start of the season and he and Andrew Molleur started picking off competitors on their trek to the front. By lap 10, Puleo was on Jordans bumper and it was almost all over. Molleur and Eric Berndt fought a bit for third behind the leaders, but a caution on lap 14 would shake up the podium spots. Puleo went on to win in his first start of the season to break Molleur’s streak, and Berndt would secure second while him and Molleur kicked Jordan off the podium.
A pair of former Street Stock competitors led the Late Model field to green of Doug Curry and Shawn Gaedeke. While Curry has tasted victory lane in the division, Gaedeke is still working his way through his rookie season. Both drivers also had a bit of bad luck in recent weeks, so for the two of them to put a straightaway lead over Mike Benedvides and Devin Deshaies was fairly impressive. Curry held off any attempts by Gaedeke to pick up his first win of the season, while Deshaies moved into the podium with just 6 to go.
One week removed from needing a backup car post-qualifying, Evan Bourgeois kicked off the SK Light feature making a statement. He took off from Eddie Gomarlo at the start while Tyler Chapman and Nickolas Hovey duked it out for third. Hovey couldn’t get a move to stick but Chapman did sending Gomarlo back a few spots. Just short of halfway however, Hovey moved into the second spot and started chipping away at the straightaway lead Bourgeois held. A caution didn’t help the inevitable as Hovey launched from the outside and cleared to take the lead away. Even a caution with 6 to go didn’t change the outcome. Hovey easily went on to win for the fourth time this season.
Al Stone III flexed his muscle on the start of the Street Stocks with a move into the lead over Ike Chima. Aaron Plemons and Jordan Hadley would settle in behind him with Hadley pecking away at Plemons heels. Plemons made the money move underneath Stone where he would go on to win for the fifth time this season, extending his point lead.
TJ Sansoucy may have been credited with the lead on lap one but it was quickly swiped away by Wade Oemcke after an attempted three wide maneuver. Riley Paul was on his own mission though, and he just as quickly took the lead away on his own. An incident on lap 5 didn’t change the trajectory of the race for Paul. He would go on to pick up his first win on the season as point leader in dominating fashion. All while Brandon Martinez worked from deep in the field and shuffled around with Oemcke for second.
The biggest field of Crown Vics to date hit the track, and hard. On lap 1 a huge incident took point contender Gregg Prevost III and Robert Jones out of contention. Visiting competitors Austin Erickson and New Hampshire track owner Ben Bosowski left the field in their dust when the race resumed with Bosowski pecking away at the back bumper of Erickson. Jake Caprio tried to close the gap and throw his hat in the ring after rebounding from the lap 1 incident but couldn’t get close enough. Erickson would ultimately win for the first time in his Speedbowl career.
Doug Meservey Jr. was in position to inherit the lead late in the Pro 4 Modified race, which he didn’t take for granted and won.
On Wednesday Sean Skinner was on top of the Super X-Cars after a thrilling finish. Christian Herman went on to easily win in the X-Cars while Jacob Burns would also repeat win in the Legend Cars. Defending Bandolero champion David Bernier scored his first win of the season under heavy pressure.
The Speedbowl is off on Wednesday, but we’re back in action for a double header weekend! First on Saturday, the SK Lights take center stage for 50 laps.
