HOVEY THRILLS CROWD WITH FIRST SK MODIFIED WIN; MORAN BACK HOME IN STREET STOCK VICTORY LANE
For immediate release from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl
WATERFORD – The SK Modifieds® have only gotten two races completed with weather and scheduling being a factor this season. Knowing that and seeing Nickolas
Hovey rocket off to a huge lead to start the feature event it was only a matter of time in 2026. It seemed like a cake walk as he pulled away from Joey Ternullo and Keith Rocco. Ternullo would fade as Todd Owen and Anthony Flannery charged through the field. Just ten laps in, Flannery moved into second but he still had quite a way to go. The race got way more competitive at the expense of Paul Buzel and Adam Gada going up and nearly over the turn 4 wall. Hovey and Flannery at the front row put on a multi-lap drag race that evolved into a cross-over battle. The result was a photo finish with Hovey picking up his first division win by a nose over Flannery, with Timmy Jordan hot on their tails.
Fresh off his qualifying win, Ryan Charland started off the SK Light race strong with Brett Gonyaw in his tire tracks. Kevin Cormier didn’t waste any time catching the top two, getting to their bumpers by lap 5. After a caution on lap 10, Charland and Cormier rode side by side for a few laps until Cormier was able to move into the top spot. Charland would get crossed up on the next restart and shuffle back into the pack allowing a battle for the ages between Gonyaw and Cormier. The two stayed side by side lap after lap even after a couple restarts and it all came down to a green white checkered finish where Cormier would capitalize and pick up his first win at the Speedbowl.
The season started off strong with a heat win for Bill Rheaume, but since then he had been clawing to stay at the point. The hard work seemed to be paying off
as he got off to a solid lead early in the Street Stocks ahead of Adam Coutu. As the laps clicked down, Greg Moran Jr and Jon Porter could be seen carving their way through the field, with Moran being the first to get by Coutu for second. Not too long after moving into second, Moran reduced Rheaume’s lead to inches and by halfway took over the lead. Chad Baxter took advantage of a little traffic and was able to move by Porter and Rheaume all in one shot. With ten to go Baxter may have caught up to Moran but nothing would make him falter. He
went on to win his first race since returning to the division and it was also his first Street Stock win since 2012.
The Mini Stocks rolled out on track with the threat of rain looming and Charles Canfield would be the one to get off to a strong start leaving Bill Sylvia and Sean Olden to duke it out for second. After a few weeks of tough luck Canfield worked hard to put space on the 6 car pack all fighting to move up in the field. Olden cleared Sylvia but only for a minute as he would cross-over and open the door for Sam Mesick to enter. With the clouds moving in and laps counting down, Sylvia set his sights on Canfield and was able to reel him in as Andrew Krzeminski passed Mesick to join the top two. Sylvia threw a nose under Canfield that wouldn’t stick and Krzeminski tried to work the outside, but Canfield would not be denied and he would celebrate his win by a nose under a light rain as the checkers flew.
Hunter Cavallaro began the Legend Car race on point and tried to hold on to the lead but an early caution allowed for Dylan Freeman, KJ Rocco, and Wade
Oemcke to take over. With Freeman now out front, eyes were on Devin Deshaies, Zachary and Brandon Martinez who had worked from a deep starting position towards the front of the field. Rocco’s day would get hindered by a spin sending him to the rear, as would Deshaies and Brandon Martinez when they got tangled around the halfway point. On the restart Zachary Martinez would have the advantage as Oemcke and Freeman traded positions for second. With the field stringing out, it was easy to watch Brandon Martinez and Deshaies rebounding from their earlier incident but time would run out. Zachary took down the win, going a perfect 3 for 3 on his Saturday night season.
A good field of Crown Vics took to the track for 20 laps of hard racing. It began with Ben LaRose and Tyrese Mello at the front until contact inside the hornets’ nest sent Gregg Prevost III into the wall while crossing Mello up and giving Jack Emerson a right rear flat. Robert Jones would take over the lead when racing resumed just a few laps into the race until Jake Caprio threw his hat into the ring, dive-bombing into the lead quickly before halfway. Even with lapped traffic thrown in the mix, Caprio couldn’t be slowed as he picked up the win ahead of Jones and Dylan Cabral.
Randy Burr dominated the 55 lap Pro Truck Challenge event.
On Thursday Night Thunder, Ryan Magliano took down the Super X-Car win with a late race pass. Adam Forster scored his first career win at the Speedbowl in the Legend Cars. Christian Herman easily went on to win the X-Car feature and Landon Heim doubled up in the Bandoleros.
Up next at the Speedbowl the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series makes up their 100-lap event that was previously rained out. We’ve also got the New England Dwarf Car Series joining the rest of our Speedbowl Saturday Nights divisions. But before that we’ve got Thursday Night Thunder with our four weekly divisions and the American Vintage Modifieds on hand.
