OWEN STAYS STRONG FOR DURATION OF SK MODIFIED FEATURE; CHRISTIAN III CROWNED IN LATE MODEL 100

OWEN STAYS STRONG FOR DURATION OF SK MODIFIED FEATURE; CHRISTIAN III CROWNED IN LATE MODEL 100

For immediate release from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl

WATERFORD – Todd Owen got the jump outside of Adam Gada in the SK Modifieds®. As he moved forward and Gada slid back, Anthony Flannery would settle into second early.  Owen began his defense of the lead over Flannery as Timmy Jordan, Nickolas Hovey, and Jon Puleo all fought for third. Jordan picked off Hovey for third around halfway but that didn’t last long as Puleo took the spot as fast. The entire race, Owen held off attacks both on the bumper and down low from Flannery but stayed strong. The three-time champion picked up his first win of the season.

Seventeen Late Models descended on the shoreline oval for the Late Model 100 that was split into two 35 lap and one 30 lap segments. Shawn Gaedeke took the first green flag, holding off some hard charges from Tyler Chapman and Diego Monahan. Gaedeke held strong in the high groove holding off many swipes from Chapman in the low groove until lap 9 when the pass was finally completed. Not too long after, Monahan would go around and Gaedeke moved to the rear of the field. Chapman took off on the restart leaving a hard fought battle between Ray Christian III and Travis Hydar. By the time Hydar moved past Christian into second, Chapman had a half-straightaway lead and would go on to pick up the win in segment 1.

When they returned, Gaedeke rallied back from the first race mishap to lead over Corey Fanning. After a lap 1 stack up set Gaedeke up to repeat, but this time over Jared Roy. Monahan fought hard for second with Christopher Buffone in his mirror. Gaedeke built up a big lead while the rest of the field sorted themselves out. Around halfway, Buffone started making moves on Monahan but couldn’t clear. Christian moved into fourth around the same time the caution flew for segment 1 winner Chapman who found himself in a trail of sparks. Gaedeke and Monahan fought hard for the top spot, but Christian stuck his nose in to try and wrestle second away. Monahan held strong for second as Christian held off Buffone for third, but the win for segment 2 would go to Gaedeke.

The final 30-lap segment of the Late Models was a little bit more volatile. Roy got to the early lead over Fanning but disaster would strike on lap 1 removing some fast cars from competition. Roy got back to the lead but found himself in the middle of Fanning and Chapman. That impressive move was for nothing though, as the caution would once again fly. Fanning got the jump over Roy the next time, as Chapman and Christian battled it out for second. Chapman would make a move for the lead, that shuffled up the banking,  and Christian took the open door and ran off with the lead. The rest of the race continued without incident and he picked up both the segment and overall win for the 100.

Milania Shilosky took control of the SK Lights early over Riley Paul but a quick caution on lap four set Leo Nunes up to take over. Robert Bloxsom III didn’t take long to carve his way out front from his eighth place starting position and into the lead, with Kevin Davis in his tire tracks. Bloxsom had to hold off strong charges from Davis over the middle portion of the race as the two pulled away from the rest of the field. Davis’ run would get cut short when he received the black flag with six to go. Bloxsom’s straightaway lead got cut as well when the caution flew with four to go. Kevin Cormier put up a brief side-by-side fight on the final restart but would shuffle back into second. A final shot with the chrome horn wouldn’t break Bloxsom’s focus as he would go on to win his third race of the season.

Jon Porter got the jump over Greg Moran Jr in the Street Stocks while the top 2 in points dueled for the runner up spot. Al Stone III cleared Chad Baxter and eventually started laying the bumper to Porter but the caution would fly on lap 6. Stone used the restart to power by Porter, and after another caution Baxter would also slip by Porter. Stone and Baxter took off from the rest of the field over the final laps, but there wouldn’t be another battle for the lead as Stone picked up his fourth win of the season.

Charles and Jaysin Beal began the Truck race from the front row with Charles moving forward and Jaysin sliding back. Ryan Lineham turned up the heat immediately battling all over Charles tailgate, eventually taking over the lead. Lineham may have built up a big lead, but Tyler Chapman was on the move from a starting spot further back in the field. He reeled in Lineham and didn’t look like he had much for the top spot until the two traded paint on the final lap allowing for Chapman to steal away the win.

The Mini Stock story looked about the same as recent weeks with David Lee running off to an early lead over Nate Taylor and Tim Dorr. Lee built up a comfortable lead as the rest of the field battled it out. Dorr would pick Taylor off, but Andrew Krzeminski would pass them both by lap 10. Charles Canfield was also on the move through the field but they couldn’t do much with Lee’s half-straightway lead. Lee would put the race together, winning in his Volkswagen for the first time this season.

Robert Jones and Jake Caprio led the Crown Vics to green with Jones clearing on lap one. Jack Emerson didn’t waste any time diving underneath both of them and taking the lead away on lap 3. Emerson ran away to safety while Jones and Caprio dueled for the runner-up position. Jones opened the door for Caprio around halfway but Emerson already had a lead too big to make up. This would be back to back wins for Emerson.

On Thursday, Grant Spaulding scored his first career win breaking Christian Herman’s record-breaking streak. PJ Evans swooped in and won in the Legend Cars putting an end to Jacob Burns’ dominance. Norm Sears picked up his second Super X-Car win of the season and Landon Heim extended his point lead winning the Bandoleros.
